Hamilton, Ontario singer-songwriter AOIFE returns with "Johnny," a swooning new single that reimagines heartbreak as an unsent letter, all moon dancing, red wine stains and the ache of a love left unresolved. Written in the voice of a woman finally putting pen to paper on everything she never said, the song opens with the line "Johnny I, hope this letter finds you well," a simple greeting that unravels into one of the most emotionally direct pieces of songwriting AOIFE has released to date.

Raised in Ashbourne, Ireland and now based in Hamilton, AOIFE carries the storytelling instincts of her upbringing into everything she writes. Raised on the folk traditions of her home country and shaped by the songcraft of Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Otis Redding, she has built a sound that draws easily on the past while sounding entirely of the moment: melodic, narrative driven and rooted in lived experience. "Johnny" continues that thread, inviting listeners into a story that feels personal even as it becomes universal.

The song traces its origins to the film 'The Last Letter from Your Lover,' whose depiction of a forbidden romance left AOIFE so moved that she felt compelled to write her way into it. She began with a sixteenth note guitar pattern that carried a folk chug and a sense of steady anticipation, mirroring the slow build of the love story itself. When it came time to write the chorus, she slowed everything down, letting the music land on the feeling of finally arriving somewhere long awaited, a moment captured in the lines "You got those moves for me, you use that touch, so sweet, feeding your love so hopelessly." The format followed naturally from there: the entire song structured as a letter, "the last letter from your lover," as she describes it.

That concept came fully to life once AOIFE brought the song to her band. Her drummer locked into the acoustic guitar pattern to create a steady, driving pulse reminiscent of classic country records, while her bassist introduced a sliding build through the pre-chorus that deepened the song's country leanings. Her guitarist's grit and bends rounded out the picture, pushing "Johnny" into a genre space AOIFE had not fully explored before. The result sits at the intersection of rock, country, indie folk and pop, a new chapter for an artist unafraid to let a song lead her somewhere unfamiliar.

"Johnny" was recorded at Hamilton's storied Grant Avenue Studio, the same room where AOIFE earned her place as winner of The Road to Supercrawl in 2025, a victory that also opened the studio's doors to her for the first time. Andrew Lauzon produced, engineered, and mixed the track, with Tyler Bruce co-mixing and Noah Mintz handling mastering. AOIFE is joined on the recording by Daniel Walton on acoustic and electric guitar, Liam Brown on bass, Ian Aisling on piano and organ, Nigel Stewart on drums, and Stephanie Sloss and Lauren Cumberbatch on backup vocals, the same core group who helped shape the song's sound in the room.

The Road to Supercrawl win also secured AOIFE a spot on the festival's Main Stage lineup, a milestone that has helped carry her into an already eventful 2026. She opened the year with a performance for CBC Music's Road to the Junos, marking Hamilton's turn hosting the award ceremony, with the set now available to watch on CBC Gem and YouTube. "Johnny" follows her latest single "High" and her debut EP 'When All Is Said and Done,' continuing a run of releases that has steadily built her reputation as one of Hamilton's most compelling young voices.

With "Johnny," AOIFE offers her most vivid piece of storytelling yet, a song that turns a single unspoken goodbye into something warm, aching and quietly hopeful. As she continues working on new material at Grant Avenue Studio, "Johnny" stands as both a snapshot of where her sound is headed and a reminder of the honesty that has defined her music from the start.
