INTERVIEW with music legends, Danny Michel and Steve Poltz Regarding 'Tandem Tour' 2024.

Longtime, award winning and engaging internationally acclaimed storytelling singer-songwriters, Danny Michel and Steve Poltz, are back together off the heels of their sold out Canadian 2023 tour and will be weaving songs and stories into their one-of-a-kind highly anticipated 2024 tandem tour. Kicking it off on November 1st and stopping in to our region at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre in Peterborough, on Nov 14th, these two dynamic musicians are back together, offering audiences an unforgettable blend of wit, spontaneity, and masterful music.

I had the pleasure of shooting some questions to icons Danny Michel and Steve Poltz.

Steve and Danny, are both audience favorites and critical darlings in equal measure—they are teaming up to play a marathon of 16 shows in four provinces in just under one month. Get set for a night of clever wordplay and pitch-perfect tunesmithing, as wrangled by a couple of top draws with a time-tested, God-given ear for melody. (Okay, that’s four ears, if you want to get technical.)  It’s a must-see of an evening, bringing together two of the wittiest, most accomplished writer-performers on today’s scene. And don’t expect some perfunctory “Okay, who goes on first tonight?” affair either: In their past  outings together, Michel and Poltz have shared the stage with a camaraderie that’s left attendees beguiled by how perfectly they mesh—and inspired by the affection between them that’s both obvious and genuine. It’s a textbook case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. Not that the parts are anything to sneeze at. Effortlessly straddling the genres of rock, pop, folk and world.

Both gentlemen are featuring their spontaneous collaborations and playful energy while touring in celebration of each of their recent introspective delights, regarding releases like Danny Michel's 2023 album Ghost Town, and Steve Poltzs' 2022 album entitled Stardust & Satellites.

1. Being entwined inside the music realm for nearly 3 decades, would you both say there is a different feel to your creative processes when writing songs here in Ontario versus the USA?

Danny: "Steve could speak better to this as I don't get to the states as often. As a Canadian it can be complicated with work visas etc. Steve has dual citizenship so I can make the cross a little easier ."

Steve: "I just like to write about whatever I’m feeling. So maybe my mood affects things. Perhaps if I’m in Ontario and it’s snowing it might change my point of view versus being on the beach in Mexico. But sometimes I get a tiger by the tail and I just follow the randomness of it all. There’s no certain rule to which I hold myself accountable to."

2. Who would you both say inspires you the most regarding your songwriting prowess?

Danny: "I find inspiration in simply observing the world, from politics to relationships to the meaning of life. Sometimes, it comes from the simplest things—like watching someone stack chairs at the end of the day as the restaurant closes—trying to capture the feeling of a moment that someone else can connect with. Sometimes it’s the act of storytelling itself that’s inspiring, the chance to create a meaningful connection."

Steve: "Prowess isn’t a word I’d use to describe my songwriting. I wish it was. It’s just a weird thing that happens and I don’t like to censor it or question it. I just like to let it flow. Like urine."

3. Danny, you have always been an environmentalist and globalist, while Steve, you have a degree in political science.  Would you both say that each of your originals reflect more on personal experiences or would you say your songs have political tones ?

Danny: "I’d say my songs are a mix of both personal experience and political reflection. As a lover of the planet Earth I’m naturally drawn to themes that reflect on the world around me and the interconnectedness of humanity. Those themes can’t help but weave into my lyrics, even when I’m writing from a more personal place."

Steve: "I just got that degree because it seemed like the easiest path outta college. I don’t even know what you’re supposed to do with a political science degree. Do you know any political scientists? I don’t. I know doctors and lawyers and dentists and salespeople."

And share with your fans how your passions mentioned above came to be.

Danny: "The first time I'd ever heard environmental songs was in my teens on an album called Lone Rhino by Adrian Belew. He was a guitarist Frank Zappa, David Bowie, the talking heads etc. Adrian’s solo records have many beautiful songs about nature and animals."

Steve: " I said to the counselor- get me out of this place. I just wanna play guitar. But my parents wanted me to graduate because they’d be proud. It was at a Catholic university. I was maybe gonna try being a priest but the no sex thing sounded too restrictive."

4. Infusing your life with musical action, never idle in 30 years, not waiting for it to happen, plethora of creativity and passion with a drive to leave your fans inspired and in the rock n roll frame of mind. What would you both say is your most valuable memory or piece of advice given to you back in the day that serves as a motivator, to keep you driven forward with your dreams.  Also, would you both have any advice to share with up and coming artists just starting out in this crazy world of entertainment?

Danny: "I’m not sure about the 1st part but for up-and-coming artists, I’d say stay true to who you are, both as a person and as an artist. Be authentic. Write music that means something to you, ignore rejection, have fun. "

Steve:  "Buddy Blue from The Beat farmers told me I needed to think of myself as a plumber. Nothing more nothing less. He’d say - you’re just a plumber. If someone calls you a genius, you’re not a genius and someone calls you an idiot, you’re not an idiot, you’re just a plumber. But I still can’t unclog a toilet."

5. With numerous nominations, awards, accolades and albums, can you both share with your fans which original song of yours is your favorite to perform and why?

Danny: " I think that's impossible to say because it changes all the time. Sometimes songs take a backseat for a while when new songs come in and then rotate and come around again it's always changing."

Steve: "Probably whatever my newest song is at the time because it gives me a buzz and I like getting a buzz."

6. Can you both take us on a musical journey through each of your latest albums?

Danny: "My latest album Ghost Town was written in what I call the dead zone - a global pandemic. Probably my most earnest and vulnerable album. It’s a rollercoaster of songs of sorrow, isolation, hope, redemption and more. I wanted people to feel they’re not alone, and even to be able to laugh about things that are painful."

Steve: "there was a pandemic and my friends The Wood brothers asked me to come over and make a record. I had nothing else to do because we were all walking around wearing masks and social distancing so I figured I would go make a record. I had a lot of extra time. It was a good experience."

7. Going back in time to when it all began for each of you, would you both have ever imagined your careers unfolding as they did? Also, did you ever think your songs would have influenced the world as they have? As both of your albums, Ghost Town, (a huge fan of eternal changeling David Bowie), and Stardust & Satellites are internationally acclaimed brilliance. Some of the most musically magical and addictive sounds, revving up your creative mystical engines releasing your enchanted complex and indescribable euphoria, with songs that stretch the limits of light rock with a folk pop feel, truly unique, and philosophically penned pieces.

Danny: "That's hard to say because I never really looked back or forward but instead try to exist in the moment. When I started I had no idea what I was doing. I was just staying true to the art and letting it unfold naturally without any real idea of how far it could go. I'm thrilled that my songs have connected with people and gifted me an exciting life and career. It’s humbling to know that something I wrote might mean something to someone I’ve never met. I think that’s the magic of music—it truly is medicine."

Steve: "Honestly I never thought I would be able to do this for a living and I’m still waiting for somebody to tap me on the shoulder and say - we were just kidding. We need you to go work at McDonald’s now."

8. Ecstatic audience members who caught Michel and Poltz on their 2023 jaunt together are still raving about it, calling their pairing “pure joy,” “mind-blowing” and “one of the best, most intimate & hilarious & heartwarming shows I have ever seen.” That’s a tough act to top, but rest assured that these dedicated, boundlessly talented boys will find a way. So when you are out on tour, I hear that each of your shows are always different from the next. With having so many returning die hard fans but, then there are those that have never had the pleasure of seeing you live until now, how do you balance that in way of song selection?

Danny: "We don't have a set list. We vibe off each other & play what feels right in the moment. It’s like making a mixed tape on the fly. One of us suggests a song then the other says “Oh man, I got a song that would go good with that!” It's a bit of a tight rope walk but we're each other's safety net too. "

Steve: " I just hope for the best. Try to keep it real. And don’t put any restrictions on myself. Let the show unfold and ride the wave."

9. Danny Michel, do you still lead audience singalongs? As well, what can fans expect at Market Hall on November 14th?

Danny: "Sing-alongs happen when the moment feels right. I'm confident we can promise you'll leave with a smile on your face. "

10. What is next upon the horizon for both Danny Michel and Steve Poltz?

Danny: "I'm gonna hunker down this winter and make a new album "

Steve: "More of the same. I will probably die on stage. It’s all I really want to do."

Thanks so much for your time and humor gentlemen, have a fantastic Fall tour 2024.

Canadian Alt-Pop Artist, Elena Erin, Reevaluates Romance and Relationships on Atmospheric New Track, “Only Kink I Haven’t Tried”

Setting the stage for her highly anticipated Gatsby-era album, Elena Erin reimagines love and intimacy on the vulnerable premise of establishing a singular, deep connection

Released THIS Friday, November 8 2024

Crafting a distinct sound that seamlessly fuses elements of Alternative, Electronic, and Dance music, Canadian Alt-Pop artist Elena Erin has carved out a musical space all her own. From her small-town roots in northern British Columbia, the Berklee College of Music alumnus soared to #2 on the CBC Top 20 with her track "Build A Ship", racking up over four million streams across platforms. Her Fall 2024 single, "Sick Rick Girl" gained traction across Canada on campus and non-commercial radio, and led to a live musical performance on the YourTV Network. Frequently compared to the likes of Billie Eilish, Halsey, Gwen Stefani, and Cyndi Lauper, Elena Erin combines clever storytelling with a meticulously designed sonic backdrop. Discovered by New York City based music producers who kept her demo vocals on a song originally meant for another artist, Elena Erin found her true artistic path, narrating her journey from small-town life to the heights of the New York elite. Her extraordinary, almost cinematic life experiences translate into universally relatable music, showcasing her remarkable songwriting talent. As she prepares to release her Great Gatsby inspired third studio album, Roaring 20s, in early 2025, Elena Erin shares “Only Kink I Haven't Tried", an atmospherically soft yet gritty song that reevaluates one's relationship with the concept of love. Reimagining relationships in the fast-paced and social media focused dating scene today, Elena Erin's latest track explores the idea of trying something new - focusing on one person, and will be released on Friday, November 8 2024.

Written by  Elena Erin and both produced and engineered by Pablo San Martin (Nile Rodgers), “Only Kink I Haven't Tried” was mastered by Grammy, Latin Grammy, and Diamond certified mastering engineer, Alex Psaroudakis.

About "Only Kink I Haven’t Tried":

A delicate and introspective reflection on love, Elena Erin's "Only Kink I Haven’t Tried" reimagines the modern dating narrative with a quiet vulnerability. In a world of fleeting connections and the attractiveness of multiple options, Elena Erin steps back to consider trying something different. Exploring the emotional territory of slowing down and stripping away the superficial thrills of love, the ethereal, piano-led ballad cleverly delves into the idea of intimacy without pretense. Opening with tender, stripped-back vocals and atmospheric melody, "Only Kink I Haven't Tried" skillfully weaves the theme of Elena Erin's forthcoming album, Roaring 20s, into this song, contrasting the image of outer glamour with an internal desire for something real. Set on the premise that after trying everything else, perhaps the only thing left is loving one person completely, the song crescendos with layers of orchestral and Hip-Hop influences in a creative balance that allows the songwriting to shine. As the "Only Kink I Haven’t Tried" fades into the sound of a heart monitor, Elena Erin proves that that love isn't always found in the rush, but in the depths of a singular, true connection.

“Only Kink I Haven’t Tried” reimagines the importance of love, the want and need for a companion and love story, and what it looks like when you take away the influence and expectations of society’s view of falling in love.” - Elena Erin

Ukrainian-Canadian Indie Pop Artist, Vitalia, Shares Intoxicating New Sapphic Pop Track About the Thrilling High of a Fast Paced Romance on “molly”

Ukrainian-Canadian Indie Pop Artist, Vitalia, Shares Intoxicating New Sapphic Pop Track About the Thrilling High of a Fast Paced Romance on “molly”

Musically trained at Concordia University, the genre-bending artist unveils a

cleverly written ode to a whirlwind romance.

Released on Friday, October 25 2024

Pushing the creative boundaries of Pop, Funk, Disco, and Alternative Rock, Ukrainian-Canadian artist, Vitalia, is a Jazz trained, Indie Pop singer-songwriter with a distinctive sound that reflects her eclectic influences. Known for her high-energy performances and genuine connection with her audience, Vitalia takes musical and lyrical inspiration from a diverse group of artists, citing ABBA, Paramore, Dua Lipa, Okean Elzy, and Florence and the Machine as influences on her spectrum of sound. Her music has been featured in widely known Canadian publications including Canadian Beats and Montreal Rocks, and Cashbox Canada. Her single "Land of Black", written in tribute to Ukrainians fighting in the current Russia-Ukraine war, was spun on radio stations across the country, sparking a music-driven conversation about the war. Her genre-defiant music is filled with engaging, hard-to-forget Pop melodies, often exploring themes of vulnerability, resilience, and romance. Ahead of her highly anticipated debut EP set for release in early 2025, Vitalia is sharing "molly", an upbeat Sapphic Pop track about the drug-like intoxication of falling for someone too fast, and the lingering crash when the whirlwind romance ends. "molly" was just released on Friday, October 25 2024. A music video for the track will follow in November.

Written by Vitalia and produced by longtime collaborator Michael Go, “molly” was mixed by Will Owen Bennett and mastered by Matt Nozetz in Montreal.

About "molly":

A cleverly written exploration of the dopamine rush of desire and crash of reality, Vitalia’s “molly” is a romantically charged track set to a haunting Indie-Pop backdrop. Stemming from a whirlwind romance, the song delves into the complexity of attraction and betrayal. With its eerie, atmospheric production inspired by artists like Billie Eilish and Lizzie McAlpine, “molly” plays with the idea of a person becoming as intoxicating as a drug, using its melody to leave an unsettling feeling that something isn’t quite right. The pre-chorus echoes with haunting, accusatory “you’s,” capturing a moment of tension and blame, while the outro leaves listeners with a raw, saturated vocal, designed to reinforce the emotional confusion. Vitalia’s vocals shift seamlessly from smooth to biting, embodying the feeling of being caught in an inescapable emotional spiral. With its driving beats and cinematic sound, “molly” is a striking example of Sapphic Pop, offering a relatable narrative that resonates with anyone who’s ever felt love and regret collide.

“molly” captures the whirlwind experience of falling for someone who changes your life in an instant, showing you a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled way of living. It’s about the rush of connection

and the crash of being left behind when they run from the very love they ignited, comparing love to a drug that lifts you up and leaves you crashing down.” Vitalia

Vitalia is a Ukrainian-Canadian singer-songwriter and actress. Starting her musical journey at age 6, performing annually at Montreal’s Ukrainian festival, she has since developed a dynamic sound that spans Pop, Funk, and Alternative Rock. With her versatile voice and eclectic style, she refuses to be confined to a single genre, embracing the diversity of her musical influences. Songwriting is a deeply personal and therapeutic outlet for Vitalia. She channels her emotions into relatable tunes, creating a sense of connection with listeners who share similar life experiences. Through her music she aims to provide comfort and a sense of belonging, reminding others they’re not alone in their struggles. Known for her engaging and energetic live performances, Vitalia interacts with her audience through dance and music, turning every show into a shared experience. She debuted her Rock era with single “what a shame” and is now preparing to release her first-ever EP, which will feature tracks like "molly," "alone in a crowd," and "insecure." Set for release in spring 2025, this project promises to further expand her musical palette and audience reach.

Remember my Philosopher King and friend, the ever engaging, Jan Schoute!

Sunday, Nov. 12th, 2017, The Red Dog played host to toast our fallen musical soul, Jan Schoute. This weekend marked 20 years since I first met Terry Guiel, Robin Hawkins and Jan Schoute in this very space, through my prior long-term relationship with Jerry. I got to appreciate a different, more personal and passionate side of live music and the bar scene thanks to Jerry.  I would frequent Sat nights at the Red Dog to capture the musical stylings of Jerichos Wall, whom Jan was a member of.  Over the years I fondly referred to him as my philosopher king, he knew what needed to be said, at the right time every time. He knew what your heart needed and that was laughter, song, compassion, a hug, a kiss and lots of "I Love Ya Man," not necessarily in that order.  It was a pleasure knowing Jan's genuine nature.  I not only enjoyed listening to his wisdom but to his soothing voice on stage and on Trent Radio.  Peterborough's finest musicians entertained for 7 hours including The Weber Brothers, Tami J Wilde with Jamie Henderson and Brent Bailey, Rick Fines, Buzz Thompson, Terry Guiel, Terry's daughter Jasher Guiel, Jeanne Thompson, 3 acts that Jan was well known as guitarist and vocalist for -Tony Silvestri Band, Jericho's Wall & Bailen to name but only a few.
They lined up to grace that infamous RD stage and as the night grew on, the talent list grew to 50 deep.

My gal pals and I arrived a few minutes behind and missed our dear friend, The Patio Daddio - Mr. Wylie Harold's performance, but, we caught up with him for a quick snuggle and hug hello.   100's of music lovers, (just like in the good old days) came from miles around.  Fans from as far away as Vancouver like dear friend-Gregory Ryan came to pay tribute to this musical heart who we so knew as
Jan the Man and Jano.

One song stood forward in my mind; unique as the songwriter, Jeanne L.Thompson.  She wrote and performed a song, on acoustic guitar, just for Jan entitled,
"Behind Glass"
Where did you go?
I'd like to know
Where did you go?
loved you so

It's like I'm behind glass
It's like I'm behind glass
Do you see me anymore?
Do you hear me anymore?
Do you feel me anymore?
Where did you go?
I'd like to know
Where did you go?
I loved you so.

It's like I'm behind glass
It's like I'm behind glass
Do you see me anymore?
Do you hear me anymore?
Do you feel me anymore?

Where did you go?
I'd like to know
Where did you go?
I loved you so

It's like I'm behind glass
It's like I'm behind glass
Where did you go?
I miss you so.

His sudden passing left behind his son Isaac, daughter Olivia, wife Allison, sister Arin Blok, best friend Bruce Francis and many extended family members.   Jan's passing has left a void and inner darkness as we all mourn together the loss of our friend and kindred soul.   Jan’s funeral was held on Tuesday, November 14th, 1 p.m. at Living Hope Church.  Pictures of Jan, his family, his musical friends were on display as you walked into the center hall, which was filled with love, pure love and plenty of it.  Paul Rellinger & family members all shared emotional memorials, including a live musical version of the Beatles "In My Life" by Terry Guiel and The Weber Brothers.
Jan was deep, he was kind, he was passionate, he was raw, he always wore his heart upon his sleeves. He was generous, inviting, funny, talented, intelligent, dedicated and he was the medicine that you required when you had sore feet, an aching heart or you needed a jump start, that re-boost when you were lost, sad or just frustrated. Peterborough not only lost a musician that was larger than life, we lost a treasure, a rare gem, that NO ONE can ever replace. Life is precious and extremely short, LOVE ONE ANOTHER,
don't be afraid to tell those,
that you care about, that you LOVE THEM, embrace your inner Jan.

I reflect back to a memorable moment, I got to experience with Jan at the Peterborough United Church on George Street, Nov. 2nd, 2014.  We honorably gathered together to sing with the amazing Weber Brothers, regarding their hit, "I Still Believe."  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0JVc8S9PaU  As you will see to the right or in the video, Jan, is standing tall in the center, upon the highest position on that pulpit, with his tambourine in hand, singing loud and proud.  I will forever, remember your humor that day, as you recited  "Romper Room's Magic Mirror" routine with your tambourine. I share this particular magical moment with Jan and 1 other gal, my best friend Reina.  I can still hear him now, ""Romper, stomper, bomper boo. Tell me, tell me, tell me, do. Magic Mirror, tell me today, did all my friends here have fun at play?" further saying as he peered through his tambourine/make shift mirror, "I see Reina and Debbie," thanks Jan for the memories.
