Ottawa, ON – April 25, 2025 The Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) is thrilled to announce the first ever Capital Music Week (CxMW), a new and innovative week-long celebration of music that places Ottawa’s music industry on the national stage. CxMW will run from May 20-25, 2025 in multiple venues across the city and will feature public concerts, professional development summits, and networking opportunities that rival other music weeks across Canada, with a creative and strategic focus on re-invigorating the local and national nightlife economies. Marking a significant milestone for Ottawa’s music sector, the launch of CxMW will showcase local talent and foster city-wide partnerships while animating numerous locations within the community.

“CxMW is Ottawa’s invitation to Canada to witness the capital’s creative pulse,” says Melanie Brulée, Executive Director of OMIC. “We’re combining major headlining talent with grassroots energy, innovative conversations, and unforgettable experiences. It’s a launchpad for artists and an invitation for the national industry to recognize Ottawa as a national music hub.”

Ottawa’s Nightlife Commissioner, Mathieu Grondin, will host the Canada After Dark Summit (May 20–21), bringing together global nightlife leaders for the first Canadian forum of its kind. From city planners and cultural policymakers to venue owners and artists, the summit explores how music can fuel local economies and reimagine nightlife culture, a strategic initiative intended to extend beyond Ottawa’s borders and help stimulate the nightlife economy across Canada. Participants include development representatives from Montreal, Kingston, Hamilton,  and London among numerous others, festival directors, the Regional Vice President of Live Nation Canada, and many more leading stakeholders in Canada’s nightlife economy. In a capital region first, Grondin has coordinated with the City of Ottawa to pilot 4AM last call liquor license extensions for eligible venues during CxMW, a move inspired by successful models in neighbouring cities Toronto and Montreal.

The centrepiece of the week is the 6th Annual Capital Music Awards (CMAs), held at Southam Hall in the National Arts Centre on May 22. For her latest album Dark Moon, Holly uniquely reshapes traditional Jazz, Pop and Country standards including reimagined versions of “No Moon At All,” “Steppin' Out with My Baby,” “Walk Away Renee,” and “Kiss Me Quick,” originally covered by Elvis Presley. Released in January, the album has been receiving high praise by the likes of German Record Critics, Stereophile Magazine, and MusicOTFuture.

Dark Moon has been longlisted by the prestigious German Record Critics for The Quarterly Critics Choice” in the jazz category.

“Cole's ability to find new meaning or fresh perspective on songs is beautifully on display in a pair of covers from Dark Moon, which in the hands of lesser interpreters could spell blah, pedestrian, or outright disaster. In her reading of "Walk Away Renee," best known from the 1966 original version by The Left Banke, the mood is "pretty, sad, and poignant. And it's not complex, but it doesn't need to be. And I like that about it so much. It's really just a vignette."
Stereophile Magazine.

“Holly’s new album ‘Dark Moon’ gives you a soft storytelling feeling that follows that journey of what is loved and performed in such a magical way that you know that this is a album made from love and power. A magnificent piece of art that will give you so much.”

Crafted with intention, intelligence, and a touch of magic, her songs are composed for kids yet resonate deeply with listeners of all ages. Backed by a cast of world-class musicians including Grammy and Latin Grammy winners, Heather’s recordings are as musically rich as they are emotionally meaningful. Known for her warmth, creativity, and sunny stage presence, she has become a go-to performer and educator for schools, libraries, and festivals alike. An advocate for accessibility in the arts, Heather is a member of RAMPD (Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities), recently speaking at Folk Alliance International (2025) on disability culture and inclusive practices as an artist living with multiple sclerosis. Known for her rich musicality, Heather’s music is beloved by families and educators alike for writing developmentally appropriate, emotionally resonant songs that promote growth across cognitive, physical, social, and emotional domains. Coined as “Kindie” music (kid and indie), Heather continues to build an inclusive musical world where every child feels seen, celebrated, and empowered, creatively offering lessons and concepts that children enjoy engaging with and exploring. As she prepares to release her Summer 2025 album, “Together”, Heather will be releasing “Happy For You” - a joyful first glimpse into the upcoming project that champions friendship, empathy, and learning to celebrate the success of others - a rare and essential lesson wrapped in toe-tapping, danceable fun. “Happy For You” will be released on Friday, April 18 2025.

"Happy For You" was written by Heather and features instrumentation by Marco Vézina-Bédard (electric guitar), Charles Frommer (tenor saxophone) and Heather Feather herself on french horn. The track was produced by Grammy and Latin Grammy Award winning producer, Dean Jones, who also performed the guitar, piano, keyboard, trombone, and drums.

About "Happy For You":

Rooted in the heartfelt desire to teach children the often-overlooked art of celebrating others, “Happy For You” offers a joyful and refreshing take on friendship, empathy, and emotional maturity for children of all ages. Inspired by Heather's reflection on her son's experience growing up in a culture of participation ribbons and the concept of “everyone wins” - the song gently introduces the idea that while not everyone can come in first, there is real joy in genuinely being happy for someone else. Delightfully playful and reminiscent of the 60s pop charm of The Monkees, the song’s light-hearted groove features real instrumentation, from the bounce of the bass to the warmth of the horn section. With lyrics that champion the values of kindness, support, and shared joy, “Happy For You” fills a lengthy and overlooked gap in children’s music, becoming an anthem for congratulating others with sincerity. A powerful tool for parents teaching emotional resilience and true friendship, and a catchy tune no matter what one's age, “Happy For You” is a celebration of connection over competition.

The vibrant, animated music video for “Happy For You” bursts with colour and movement, bringing the song’s message to life through a playful and heartwarming narrative. Following a diverse group of children engaging in a variety of activities - from racing one another to painting sessions. In each scene, it becomes clear that one child stands out or “wins,” whether one finishes first, or draws the best picture - yet the true magic lies in the reactions of the others. Instead of disappointment or envy, the children display genuine joy for their friends’ successes. Uplifting, relatable, and visually engaging, the video mirrors the song’s core message: that happiness doesn’t always have to come from being the best, but can be found in celebrating others with an open heart.

(Toronto, ON - April 10) - Today, Canadian indie music guerillas Lowest of the Low unveil a new music video for latest single “The Only One I See”, directed, animated and edited by LOTL drummer David Ray Alexander. The ska infused track arrived last week alongside the announcement of their seventh studio album, Over Years and Overnight, out May 2 via Sonic Envy.

David Ray Alexander, as a digital effects artist, wanted to see how far he could push his knowledge of the AI workflow to transform single still images into sequences for the video. “It appears to be 100 short video clips, but the source material is exclusively still photographs referenced from the public domain and the band's personal archive,” David shared. “Custom models and prompts were used to create over a thousand video sequences that were curated and edited down for the final product.”

The album’s lone foray into reggae and ska, “The Only One I See”, is a playful detour that underscores the record’s emotional core. “It’s the only one on the record that’s got a reggae/ska vibe,” says frontman and principal songwriter Ron Hawkins. “We were doing much more of that on the last record. It’s about a person saying to their partner, ‘Among the billions of people in the world, you're the only one I see.’”

A milestone for the band, Over Years and Overnight marks the first time three of its eleven songs were co-written by all members—a testament to their deepening creative synergy. The album’s title, borrowed from Charles Yu’s novel Interior Chinatown, captures the paradox of time—how success can feel both like a slow burn and an overnight explosion. “How did the band go from a decade of searching for a scene to suddenly breaking out in the early ‘90s?” Hawkins reflects. “Well… over years and overnight.”

Lowest Of the Low which comprises David Alexander, Ron Hawkins, Lawrence Nichols, Michael McKenzie, and Greg Smith — has been selling out shows across Canada and the U.S. Their enduring impact was further cemented in 2024 with the release of the Apple TV+ documentary Subversives – The History of the Lowest of the Low.
While the band has never been one to dwell on the past, their legacy in Canadian indie rock is nothing short of iconic. Their 1991 platinum-selling debut album, Shakespeare My Butt, remains a landmark in Canadian indie music, earning a Top 10 spot on Chart Magazine’s 100 Greatest Canadian Albums of All Time on three separate occasions. The record's sharp wit, infectious hooks, and airtight harmonies propelled it to become the best-selling independent release in Canadian history at the time.
Renowned for their electrifying live performances, LOTL built a devoted following that continues to grow. Their contributions to the Canadian music landscape have been recognized with a 102.1 The Edge Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Canadian Indie Rock Hall of Fame in 2008. Their story is one of timeless musical brilliance.
Now, with all cylinders firing, Lowest of the Low are hitting the road once again, bringing Over Years and Overnight to longtime supporters and a new generation of fans. See below for a list of upcoming tour dates.
