Kitchener Blues Fest Aug 10 2019 Darby Mills

 Canada’s biggest free admission blues festival celebrated it’s 19th Annual TD Kitchener Blues Festival drawing in 140,000 people in four days, with 43 bands on 4 stages making close to $4 million dollars.  Sat. Aug. 10th, YNC’s stage lineup went all day with Big Dan, The Topside,

Lachy Doley, JD McPherson, 2-time Gemini nominee, and Juno awarded Jack Semple followed by the stupendous Juno nominated Darby Mills.  Darby Mills Project lit the stage ablaze with their cerebral melodies of complexity and tranquillity, as guitarist Randy Gabel, bassist Dave Hopia, drummer Chris Murray Driver and keyboardist Doug Rasmussen, alongside Darby, dove deep into her extensive catalog as they nailed hits from her FLYIN SOLO album with Want it, Run, Hot Water, Cry To Me, Monkey, Bad Bay Boy, as well, blending in the fuel-injected Feel My Body from her LIVE album. Engaging the fans with some The Headpins classics Staying All Night, Just One More Time, and Don't It Make Ya Feel, projecting their smooth version of Stories' Brother Louie.  DMP covered 3 pioneering women in music, that were instrumental in creating Darby’s voice today: Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart; Kiki Dee's I Got The Music In Me and Carol King’s song that Aretha Franklin made famous (You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman. DMP ended with a message, "Don't Stop Keeping On."   The 1000s in the audience roared with anticipation and DMP extended a 3 song encore nailing Head Pins Turn It Loud, Nazareth's Hair of The Dog, and Allman Brother's Whipping Post to close out their one-of-a-kind outdoor set.    Kicking Sept. 11th into Notorious overdrive with an all-original Loverboy lineup, co-founder/frontman Mike Reno, co-founder/guitarist Paul Dean, drummer Matt Frenette, keyboardist Doug Johnson along with bassist since 2000, Ken ’Spider’ Sinnaeve delivered hit after nostalgic hit to the full house Living Arts Centre, we sure were the Lucky Ones.  I felt as if I was the Queen of The Broken Hearts as I allowed them to Take Me to the Top. With each Jump, literally sprang from their seats like being released from a tightly wound magical music jack in the box.  This Could Be The Night, is one to remember, as Mike Reno stated, "This next song was the 1st song that started it all for us, there was no turning back." The stage was on fire, man oh man The Kid Is Hot Tonight.  "Remember where you were, what you were doing, and if you were caught doing it," Reno said.  We wanted this stellar show to go on all night and would be disappointed When It's Over.  Mike Reno asked, "How many men were here tonight" (crowd cheered) and the deafening roars when he asked," How about the ladies," and sure enough there was more women-to-men ratio, some things never change.  When it comes to rock n roll music, it turns you inside out and I know I reverted back to 1 of those 80s Hot Girls in Love instantly.  Loverboy hasn't changed, they are still chick magnets, and man it was sweltering inside that 1,350-seat Hammerson Hall, I was ready to explode, so thrilled to be a part of the audience’s responsive energy upon that magical Wed night. I felt young again, transported back in time into my teenage self as LB really did Turn Me Loose.  The audience went ballistic as they cranked out their classic rock staple to cement the evening's last song Working for the Weekend, and encored loud and proud leaving us Lovin Every Minute of It!  For full reviews/photos click on www.seeingshowswithdebdraper.com

The new song GOOD LOVE is out as of May 19th, 2023, from Canadian R&B/Neo-Soul artist, Aphrose, From the Forthcoming Neo-Soul Album!

Toronto's R&B/Soul Artist, Aphrose, Transports Listeners to the Golden Age of 70's Era Soul With Brand New Single, "Good Love", From the Forthcoming Neo-Soul Album

The single was released on May 19 2023

With music that moves between the golden age of 70's Soul and its modern iterations, Canadian R&B, Soul, and Neo-Soul artist, Aphrose, (Joanna Mohammed) is a stunningly expansive vocalist and creative lyricist who honours the origins of the genres through her expertly created, and historically informed sound. With vocal dexterity that would impress her musical heroines, Aphrose's dazzling, 1970's hued sound transports listeners to a time when Soul music went beyond a musical category and into a feeling while incorporating the Soulful sounds of today. Raised in Scarborough in a Trinidadian household by parents who owned a record store in Toronto's West end, Aphrose gravitated to the music of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson, eventually wrapping their influences into a sound all her own. Her truly explosive vocal talent has led the artist to perform background vocals for Daniel Caesar, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Jessie Reyez, and Charlotte Day Wilson, and after hearing her song on CBC Radio, the opening spot on Chantal Kreviazuk & Raine Maida's Moon vs. Sun tour, invited by Kreviazuk herself. Featured in Exclaim!, on CBC Music's First Play, and reviewed on Earmilk, Aphrose's music and talent have firmly placed her on a steep incline to becoming one of Canada's leading Soul artists. As she gears up to release her sophomore album this Fall featuring both Classic and Neo-Soul, Aphrose will be releasing her first single from the project, a shimmering vintage Soul ballad about finding the right person titled "Good Love", on Friday, May 19 2023.

Written by Aphrose and production trio SafeSpaceship (Scott McCannell, Chino DeVilla and Ben Macdonald) who also performed on and produced the track, Good Love which features the incredible vocal stylings of Toronto artist, Kyla Charter.

About "Good Love":
Bathed in rhythmic percussion, shimmering synth, and a wall of lushly harmonious vocals, "Good Love" delivers the delightful, invigorating musical magic of live instrumentation, player collaboration, and the subtle intricacies that tie the sounds of Soul with a bow. A song that celebrates the search and ultimate discovery of the right love, "Good Love" creatively evokes the feelings the track journeys through, communicating to the listener through both lyric and instrumentation. Taking listeners through the difficulty of finding love, and the occasional need for reassurance, Aphrose's newest single tenderly reaffirms that finding "Good Love" is not only possible but exceptional when the time comes. Aphrose's stunning range crosses the vocal stratosphere, with both a lead and background performance that packs the powerful punch of Soul's female giants, showcasing her astonishing range, and complete vocal control. Replicating the warmth of the 70's - a time when listeners could almost feel a sound, "Good Love" could easily play between "Lady In My Life" and any track from "Songs In The Key Of Life". Rhythmically glistening with percussive and vocal interplay, Aphrose's "Good Love" offers an enchanting back to the height of Soul, and forward to her glowing take on it.

Taking her artist name from her mother's birth name, which changed after her grandmother converted their family to Christianity, Aphrose honours her Trinidadian roots, family, and musical upbringing with her stage name. Her sophomore album, set for release in Fall 2023, will continue to honour the Soulful sounds of the 1970s along with the Neo-Soul sounds of today, integrating pieces of her family and upbringing throughout.

'Good Love' is about accepting the love that we so often deny ourselves because we feel undeserving. When the world feels out of control, there's a safe space where you can go to where you feel seen, understood and accepted; that's the "Good Love" I'm talking about." ~Aphrose.

Toronto-based soul music artist Joanna Mohammed (aka Aphrose) is no stranger to the Canadian music scene. With a reputation for powerful R&B vocal stylings, she has worked with international heavyweights Daniel Caesar, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Jessie Reyez, Nikki Yanofsky and Charlotte Day Wilson, to name a few. After ten years as a working professional vocalist and hungry to express and pursue her own creative ideas, Joanna Mohammed debuted under her artist name Aphrose (chosen from her mother's birth name). After a string of successful single releases in 2018 and 2019, Aphrose shared her debut LP Element. The nine-track album earned her national acclamation and opportunities - including a live performance feature on CBC Music First Play, tour support for Moon Vs Sun (Chantal Kreviazuk & Raine Maida), song placement on CBC drama series Diggstown, and a spot lending her vocals to a Sportsnet 2019 NBA Finals commercial. She followed up the album with singles like: "If We Ever
Change" and "Bobby Daba" in 2021, each racking up over 100,000 plays on Spotify.

Raised in the culturally diverse neighbourhoods of Scarborough, Aphrose’s musical tastes and influences are wide and run deep, shaped by the music present in her Trinidadian household. With an apparent musical reverence for soul legends Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to modern icons like Amy Winehouse and Frank Ocean, Aphrose’s songs both lyrically and musically embody self-realized power, euphoric love, and ancestral strength.

Aphrose’s sophomore album, Roses, is slated to be released in the Fall of 2023.

Aphrose shares, "It combines all the sounds I love and is a love letter to my family and where I come from. Throughout the record, there is audio of my (late) grandmother Rose speaking/praying that was isolated from old hi8 home video tapes, and the title single that will be released Roses, is a tribute to her. I'm excited about this body of work because it feels really honest and is exactly the music I want to make right now."

Multi-Award Winning Indigenous Roots Artist Jade Turner Teams Up With Legendary Canadian Artist Crystal Shawanda on Moving New Single, "Deadweight" Released on Friday, June 2, 2023

Multi-Award Winning Indigenous Roots Artist
Jade Turner Teams Up With Legendary Canadian Artist Crystal Shawanda
on Moving New Single, "Deadweight"
Released on Friday, June 2, 2023
Canadian Roots-Country artist Jade Turner is an exceptional storyteller and emotive vocalist with an innate ability to make anyone who listens to her music feel as though they too have had the experiences she writes and sings about.

 A proud member of the Misipawistik Cree Nation, Turner was raised in Northern Manitoba with an upbringing rooted in the nature of storytelling.

Her exposure to Indigenous artists and Country music paved the way for the artist to take home the Best Country Album at the 2017 Indigenous Music Awards, and the Emerging Artist of the Year award at the 2018 Manitoba Country Music Awards where she received a whopping 18 nominations.

Her lyrics tell personal tales that range from serious topics to satirical and are delivered with her dynamic vocals that span from gritty and raw, to spirited and energetic stage presence on singles like “Somehow Someone,” “Hangover Blues,” and “Worth.” Her 2017 debut album, North Country, was named Best Country Album at the Indigenous Music Awards in 2017 where the cinematic music video for her single, “Worth”, also received a nomination.

From a career that seemed nearly impossible due to the absence of Indigenous female representation in mainstream music, Turner credits Blues artist Crystal Shawanda as one of her major inspirations, as through Shawanda's presence Turner knew a career in music was possible for her too.

In an incredible, full circle musical moment, Turner and Shawanda teamed up to write "Deadweight" - Turner's exceptionally poignant new single about shedding the opinions of others and moving forward with confidence, which was just released on Friday, June 2, 2023.

Turner teamed up with her longtime musical partners, Stephen Arundell (Desiree Dorion) and Murray Pulver (Crash Test Dummies, Doc Walker) on guitar to help bring the track to life. The song was mixed by Bart McKay (Doc Walker, Brett Kissel), and was mastered by Trevor Case at Case Mastering. Turner will release a stripped-down version of the song along with a video later in June.
About "Deadweight":
Firmly in the center of Americana and Country, Jade Turner's "Deadweight" shares her deeply personal experience with the cruelty of social media. Soon after giving birth to her son while enjoying the early days of motherhood, Turner experienced negative comments about her appearance on Facebook from someone she had never met. Sharing her experience with legendary Canadian Country turned Blues artist Crystal Shawanda, Turner teamed up with the icon to pen one of her most personal tracks to date. Opening with a harmonious blend of acoustic and electric guitar, Turner expresses painful memories of bullying, often moving as a child, and a lack of Indigenous representation in the media. The verses culminate into a powerful chorus centered on the theme of resilience, self-acceptance, and not allowing others to determine her worth. A moving song about letting go of societal pressures and what others say, Turner cuts her losses and stands tall, unwavering, and resolute in not allowing external factors to determine who she is.

With the intent of creating a song where the melody, instrumentation, lyrics, and vocal performance unite in a way that deepens the experience for the listener, Turner focused on the dynamics of the guitars, her emotive vocals, and lyrical simplicity to create a powerful ballad that so many can relate to. Noting that of all her music, "Deadweight" is her favorite song to perform live. Most importantly, and part of the message she hopes the song will convey, Turner says, "I am perfectly fine with myself".

"Deadweight is about believing in yourself and finding the strength to let go of what happened. It's only you that can determine who you are." - Jade Turner

  Even though she doesn’t play an instrument, Turner knows that her songwriting approach is unusual, yet it’s already earned her the 2018 title of Emerging Artist of the Year from the Manitoba Country Music Awards, and an incredible 18 other MCMA nominations. In 2022, Turner received a nomination from the Western Canadian Music Awards in the Indigenous Artist of the Year Category, as well as three nominations at the Manitoba Country Music Awards.

With the release of her brand new single, Deadweight, Turner is showing no signs of slowing down.

IMPACT AWARD
Family Brown

The original organization was formed under the name of the Ontario Country Music Association in May of 2007, by Rob MacArthur, founding patron Linda Wright and a number of interested and enthusiastic individuals who thought it was time to have a voice for country music in Ontario: the “talent” including songwriters, musicians, bands; and the “industry” including radio, management, publishers, booking agents and record companies.

They identified a strong need for educational workshops and resources to strengthen each area of this growing industry.

One of OCMA’s first orders of business was to set up a website for communications, news feeds, and other forms of communication with members as well as the general public. One of the key features of the original website was an internet radio station featuring members’ music, although it has since been discontinued.

The first board of directors was established in October 2008. Barry Haugen was President, Anya Wilson was Vice President, and Drew Allen was Secretary-Treasurer. The other directors were Terry Fernihough, Bruce Good, Bill Hart, Peter Linseman, Rob MacArthur, Heather Ostertag, and Bob Wilson.

Shortly thereafter, it was decided to adopt a new name – “Country Music Association of Ontario” or the “CMAOntario” – to avoid confusion with a defunct organization operating under the old name. The Country Music Association of Ontario was incorporated without share capital under the Corporations Act (Ontario) on March 25, 2010.

The CMAOntario attracted membership through showcases or Open Stages as they were known. The first showcase was in Oshawa and the second was at the Gibson Guitar Center in Toronto in 2008. Since then it has expanded to incorporate seminars and “Demoramas” at which both members and non-members critique members’ music.

The CMAOntario continues to grow its membership and to assist in the career development and education of as many of its writers, performers, musicians, and music industry people as possible. In May 2014, CMAOntario held its second annual Awards Show; and in November 2014, it will host its first two-day educational seminar “The Road to Independence” which will also offer showcasing opportunities.

Founding Sponsors

In order to garner support for the organization in its early days, a Founding Sponsors Program was launched. The initiative was limited to 10 companies who would be recognized in perpetuity as the Founding Sponsors of the CMAOntario. It's with tremendous gratitude that we thank each of them.

The Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAOntario) is an Ontario-based, province-wide, not-for-profit organization. The objective of the CMAOntario, through the leadership and experience of our Board of Directors, is to celebrate, foster and support the growth and development of Ontario’s country music community and all those associated with the Ontario country music infrastructure – provincially, nationally, and internationally.

“MAKING ONTARIO COUNTRY MUSIC MATTER”
The CMAOntario represents the interests of recording artists and independent, owner-operated music businesses in Ontario. The Association was incorporated without share capital under the Corporations Act (Ontario) on March 25, 2010, and prior to being incorporated, the CMAOntario operated as an unincorporated not-for-profit entity formed in 2008.

ASSOCIATION MANDATE
The CMAOntario works continually with passion and dedication to develop opportunities and initiatives to expand the infrastructure necessary to help Ontario country music artists and small and medium-sized enterprises compete in today’s ever-changing competitive marketplace.

Through its programs, CMAOntario:
• educates and encourages creativity;
• celebrates the unique achievements and contributions of the Ontario industry;
• provides its members with a hub for information and resources;
• facilitates connections and communications among members and between them
and industry leaders and stakeholders

Although initiatives are targeted toward the CMAOntario membership, they are also designed to advance the entire country's music industry province-wide.

The ongoing successful careers of artists like The Reklaws, Tim Hicks, James Barker Band, River Town Saints, Jason Blaine, Jason McCoy, Cold Creek County, Genevieve Fisher, Jessica Mitchell, and Meghan Patrick are just a few examples of how the CMAOntario’s dedicated undertakings have translated into positive results.

By investing in the potential of artists that continue performing today, the CMAOntario is laying a solid foundation to build sustainable careers for tomorrow. With a position of respecting tradition and recognizing past artistic successes, it is preserving, conserving, and enriching the heritage and legacy that continues to shape Ontario’s country music identity and resiliency.

OBJECTIVES
Through the leadership and experience of the Board of Directors, the Association aims to:
• Foster and support the growth and development of Ontario’s country music and industry
• Develop opportunities for Ontario artists, creators, and all those associated with the
Ontario country music industry
• Provide its constituency with the necessary tools to build their music careers and businesses and to promote Canadian music interests throughout the world
• Boost the economic activity of members by providing them with opportunities to showcase before new audiences and industry leaders
• Provide access to industry leaders, key buyers, and timely information on developing trends and technologies in a domestic forum that benefits the greater industry’s interests
• Aid in making business-to-business introductions
• Produce timely comprehensive development sessions that feature industry leaders
• Promote Ontario artists/creators and musical content to other markets through partnering with and attendance at other industry events provincially and nationally
• Provide a platform for members to promote their latest projects and performances through the CMAOntario newsletter, website, and social media channels
• Recognize and celebrate the achievements of Ontario artists and content creators through the annual CMAOntario Awards, thus strengthening their ability to maintain a sustainable career
• Encourage cultural diversity, and gender equality and ensure
inclusivity in all opportunities and initiatives

We promote civility, integrity, and respect among our stakeholders as we strive to provide access and relevant opportunities for all of our members wherever we possess the means to assist them.

CMAOntario BOARD DIVERSITY POLICY
CMAOntario is committed to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment where all Board members (whether elected or appointed), staff, volunteers, and members feel respected and valued regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation or identity, disability, education, or any other social or cultural identification.

We are committed to being non-discriminatory and providing equal opportunities for employment, volunteering, and advancement in all areas of our work.

The Board of Directors of CMAOntario believes in the benefits that diversity offers and it recognizes that a range of perspectives makes prudent business sense. Having a Board composed of men and women with a multitude of skills, experience, backgrounds, and perspectives means:

• competitive advantage;
• robust understanding of opportunities, issues, and risks;
• inclusion of different concepts, ideas, and relationships;
• enhanced decision-making and dialogue; and
• heightened capacity for oversight of the organization, its relevance, and governance.

Our Board’s philosophy and goals to provide informed leadership for diversity, inclusion, and equity include:
• We strive to see diversity, inclusion, and equity in connection with our vision and mission for the benefit of those we serve.
• We aim to recognize and address inequities in our policies, programs, and services.
• We will update and document progress on our diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
• We commit to investigating underlying assumptions that oppose or challenge our diversity policy.
• We commit to being transparent about diversity in all our interactions.
• We will dedicate our time and resources to expanding greater diversity within our Board and leadership positions.
• We commit to leading with respect and tolerance and we encourage all employees and volunteers to express this in their work within our organization.

All Board appointments will collectively reflect the diverse nature of the business environment in which the organization operates and be made on merit, in the context of the skills, experience, independence, and knowledge which the Board deems to be effective.

The Board is committed to ensuring gender diversity and to diligently act to effect change. It aspires to maintain a Board in which each gender represents at least 40% of individuals.

PRINCIPLES
Diversity of thought is enhanced through intentional effort. CMAOntario
will be intentional in ensuring diversity.

Credibility is enhanced through the Board and its leadership diversity. CMAOntario will pursue a well-rounded, diverse, and credible approach to ensuring Board and leadership diversity.

Legitimacy is enhanced through respected, experienced, senior leaders. To ensure the diversity strategy of the organization is viewed as a legitimate process, all appointments will be driven by merit.

Visibility is enhanced through the promotion of broad and common goals. Visibility enhances reputation. Gender diversity and inclusion imperatives are prominent on today’s public stage and across industries. Going public with a Board diversity strategy is a helpful step in holding ourselves accountable, setting an example, and providing thoughtful leadership in the industry.

Accessibility is enhanced through a powerful collective voice. We will balance the intent of this policy with our need to be a powerful voice for diversity in all of its forms.

PROCESS
To achieve its diversity aspirations, the Board will:
• Ensure the board’s composition considers the balance of skills, experience, knowledge, perspectives, independence and characteristics in alignment with the strategic needs of CMAOntario and the environment in which it operates.
• Identify suitable candidates for appointment to the Board considering credentialed candidates against objective criteria, and with due regard for the benefits of diversity on the team.
• Maintain an ongoing list of potential candidates. The list will strive to include a balanced proportion of genders. Whenever the list is not gender balanced, for each cycle of Board recruitment, CMAOntario will not rely on the list but will search beyond it to achieve balance.

• The CMAOntario recognizes that the presence of any one culture or identification does not guarantee integrity any more than the absence of any one culture or identification undermines integrity.
